Rose ID

Hi all, I'm hoping someone may recognise this beauty! We're slowly rejuvenating the garden of the house we moved into 2 and a bit years ago. During our first spring, I noticed this rose had put out just one flower and was very straggly so, last year, in late winter, I pruned it back hard. It didn't flower at all last year, but this spring it has bounced back with lots of flowers and flower buds!

The buds are creamy yellow with an orangy-red streak, opening to largish cream, almost white, flowers which have a yellow tinge towards the centre and yellow stamens. Any help gratefully received!

..it may be 'Fruhlingsgold' that one.. rather late flowering like they all are now..

.. if you could show a photo of the receptacle, it would help confirm.. thanks..

..yes it is, thanks for that.. and yes I confirm it is 'Fruhlingsgold'... ['Spring Gold'] .. this is a hybrid Spinossisima rose that only flowers once in late Spring..

.. it should therefore only be pruned immediately after flowering, to keep it within bounds, and you should keep all growth it produces after that, for next years flowers..
..this is why it didn't flower for you last year as you pruned it hard at the wrong time..

...  you might also want to keep the spent flower heads, without pruning any off,  as they will produce dark red, burgundy coloured hips in autumn, then you will have to judicially prune back anything that gets in your way but without reducing the plant too much..

  • I can't thank you enough - that's absolutely brilliant. It's my first post on this forum, which I've been dipping in and out of as a visitor for years, so to have my question answered so quickly and thoroughly is enormously helpful and welcoming.

    Thank you again.
