Asparagus B and Q seeds

I have purchased asparagus seeds and then noticed information on the packet as follows;

"Don't harvest until the third year after sowing."

Can anyone explain?  I have never come across such an unusual statement.  I am sure all will be revealed ....hopefully!

Thank you in advance!  Vicky

    Asparagus is a plant that needs time to form
    a crown with enough energy to produce spears to harvest without depleting it so much that the plant dies.

    So yes, at least 3 years before you can begin to harvest a little ... but a well cared for asparagus  bed should continue to be productive for 20 years or more.

  • Apologies for the late response.   Thank you for the details.  I am patient, so that is one factor for my eight, tender spears.  I hope at least another eight spears push up.  Thank you for sending the link.  One step at a time for this challenge!
