Spud Newbie Question

Hi All

How long do I have to keep earthing up my potatoes (Maris Bard and Nadine)? The earth mounds are currently 18 inches high and still the tops of the plants are coming through! Is it just until the danger of frost has passed or is it to stop the spuds going green?

Thanks for your help
I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong...

To stop the spuds going green, did you plant them in a trough?
  • No, they're in the ground and I've earthed them up as and when.

I meant did you dig a trough to plant them in?
  • The actual spuds need to be covered to stop them going green, but the leaves need light.

You plant them in a trough at least 8 inches down then the earthing up isn't a problem surprising how the spuds surface
  • Thanks - I planted them about six inches down. At what stage do you stop earthing them up?
