White currant

I don't think I like them. Are they meant to be sour?
I tried a few late summer last year. They were still on the bush as the squirrels didn't want them.
What do you do with them? Are they just for cooking?

I planted one and had fruit last year that tasted nice in the Autumn. Maybe it depends on the variety and personal taste. I'm not a big fan of things that are very sweet anyway. I like the taste of black currants as well and I know some people will just use these for jam which I find is too sweet. I found them to be a similar taste to red currants but there is an issue with knowing when they are ripe as I can't see a clear colour change in white currants to indicate this like in some of the other currants.

Maybe I tried them too soon @robairdmacraignil. I won't be tempted to try them before autumn this time😊

They are sweeter than black currants so that should give you a better indication of readiness.

They are a dessert currant, its like gooseberries you can get the dessert ones as well as the ones for cooking and adding sugar to your liking, they are always sold as dessert currants.I grew some white currants years ago and they tasted lovely and sweet.

@Plashing. I suspect that I picked them way too soon. The squirrels knew😕
