Yes, I think so, would help with the drainage.
Do hope it survives, good luck.

@davebettz I hope your honeysuckle recovers!

If you don't mind me asking, what is that lovely silvery plant in the top left corner of your second post? Is it growing in shade?

On your question, i grow almost all my plants in pot and always add expanded clay at the bottom of pots. They add drainage, and also help store and release water back to the plant roots so help reduce water stress in between waterings.

    Hi do you mean this?

    It's our salix tree

Excuse the watering can its the only way to stop the dog from jumping up onto the planter

Thanks! yes indeed - it's gorgeous.  What kind of salix is it? It looks like it might be a Hakuro nishiki. Is the planter open to the ground?

Sorry for the barrage of questions - I'm looking for a feature tree for my small garden, and I love willows, but wrote them off given we are in part shade, and have an underground cistern.

Yes it's that type we love them we've got one on the front of the house as well, that we planted last year.

The planter is open at the bottom for the salix, it seems to love where it is, it's quite boggy in that corner

I've cut the honeysuckle right back but I've found out the garden centre has a plant warranty, not that I feel comfortable taking back a dead plant for an exchange
