Bougainvillea

Any idea why new shoot growth should turn black? Could it be because of aphids?

They aren't really House Plants as such - in a suitable climate they are planted in the ground  and are attractive but vigorous climbers.
Unless you have the right climate to grow in the ground, you may not have much luck.

Check out the Bougainvillea Lilac placement thread - it may give you more of an idea of what you are dealing with :)

Aside from a late cold spell, an aphid, white fly or scale insect infestation could also be the cause. The bugs produce a sweet substance (honeydew excrement) which coats the surface of the leaves & stems and this allows a black mold to grow on them.
  • Whilst I accept what has been said about them not being suitable for Northern climate, I have successfully grown it indoors on window cill. There have been bracts before. The suggestion of white fly seems likely, these seem to target the new growth shoots
