They aren't really House Plants as such - in a suitable climate they are planted in the ground and are attractive but vigorous climbers. Unless you have the right climate to grow in the ground, you may not have much luck.
Aside from a late cold spell, an aphid, white fly or scale insect infestation could also be the cause. The bugs produce a sweet
substance (honeydew excrement) which coats the surface of the leaves & stems and this allows
a black mold to grow on them.
Whilst I accept what has been said about them not being suitable for Northern climate, I have successfully grown it indoors on window cill. There have been bracts before. The suggestion of white fly seems likely, these seem to target the new growth shoots
