Laying turf after using mini digger

Hello everyone
I’ve recently moved & the previous owner had two dogs who used to dig holes in the garden. My husband initially thought we could level this by hand & reseed, but we’ve ended up using a mini digger to turn the whole area over. We have pulled out quite a bit of the grass, but lots is now mixed in underneath....
Q) Would this cause an issue to any turf we lay on top?
Q) Is there a certain amount of time we should leave the area to settle before laying the turf?
Q) Would you recommend using a weed killer at this stage? What recommendations & how long is required before it’s no longer harmful for new turf (we also have two cats so want to make sure it’s pet friendly too)
Many thanks

Weedkillers work on plant leaves, not the ground, so you needed to do that a minimum of 2 weeks before you used the mini digger.  Best bet now is to lay a couple of inches of good quality topsoil over the area, tread it down, seed and deal with any weeds which appear, later.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks Bob. The soil is pretty reasonable, would you recommend a soil improver before turf?

Sorry, missed your reply.  If the soil is reasonable, doesn't get waterlogged, and you can rake it to a nice tilth that the turf can easily get its roots down into, then I'd say no need.
