Turns out it was the weather, the changing from cold to warm to cold again was too much, as soon as the weather settled they started making masses of flowers and i didn't lose any of the flowers to bud drop after that.
That's great that they've recovered. A long dry spell can just make them stall completely, and I've had one pot which has struggled after we had an unprecedented hot dry fortnight. It's in a sunnier position than the others, and I just couldn't keep it hydrated enough. It's recovering now that temps are back to a more normal level, and I should get more flowers soon.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
