    Yes, a herbaceaous clem? That would work for ground cover but a faff for a fence.

    Sorry I wasn’t clear it’s a 3 foot wall with a sloping bed above it and a fence at the back. I think the bed is mostly filled with builders rubble but there is as holly and a buddleia growing in it. Lots of forget me nots and many many weeds and one alpine which spills down the wall. It’s fairly hot and dry. Maintenance would be difficult so a climber to brighten the ivy covered fence would need to fend for itself. The plan is to plant lots of ground cover/alpines in the bed itself with maybe another buddliea.

    No, a clinging one e.g. viticella. I cut mine down to 45cm each March; it's already covering two fence panels.

    @Loxley Group 4? 

    @debs64 If the conditions are hot and dry, then clematis is a no go. I think solanum/virginia creeper could be good.

    Berberis bagatelle might be interesting as a ground cover.
