Common Jasmine, filling the trellis

Hello,

I planted a common jasmine last year (see images, 2 first year, 1 present).

As you can see it filled the framework well, however this year the foliage is non-existent lower down and all new growth is at the top.

I’m hoping to have a wall of green and (fingers crossed) lots of flowering. Can anyone suggest if I’m doing something wrong? If so, any tips?

Many thanks!

Dan

I cut mine right back in the autumn. Then, in spring you get more shoots and the plant will thicken. You can also weave some of the long shoots into gaps. As the spring is late, I would think you still have time to cut it back as far as the crossbar on the fence.

Good advice so far but also train it more horizontally than vertical as this slows down the sap flow and encourages side shoots.

I agree with B3. When they are young, you should concentrate on allowing them to thicken by pruning in late summer. You don't have to prune all, but at least half when they are so young. Then the following year prune the other branches back that you did not prune the previous year. This keeps the base from getting too woody.

Thanks all! I shall cut back half and see how it goes 👍🏻
