Hi, everyone. I recent start to grow mangetout plant. I pick up snails everyday, however I still see the leave looks like been eaten as picture shown. May I know what is the cause of this, and how should I prevent it? If there are two things I must do when I grow Mangetout, what would them be?
Hello, did you find the snails actually on the plant,? I grow different varieties of peas, including mangetout, have never had a problem with snails. Some people have s problem with pigeons eating them. Well,2 things would be water a lot, especially as they are in a pot, feed them when you get pods. I use tomato feed.keep checking for snails in the evenings then, and maybe cover them with netting if it's birds, although if they only nibble a little bit of leaf,it shouldn't. cause problems, the sparrows nibble my chard
Hi, day time my next door always have 10 pigeons flying around. I never thought birds will eat them. I have seen snails on the pot once. but not on this pot where picture is taken. I have not shown you how bad my other pots are... leaves have gone 80%, but most of damaged leaves are at bottom, that's why I think may be due to Slug or snail? I never check them in the evening. I should cover it up
@Nanny Beach Should I water this plant mangetout daily? Do you put diluted (15ml/1.5L bottle) liquid red bottle tomato feed to water them twice a week when the flower comes out please? This is my feeding: (1.5L water+ small cap of tomato/veg feed, mix with some fish bone fed bought from market).
Looks like slug or snail damage to me, too. They mainly come out at night, so a visit with a torch in the dark will find a lot more than during the day.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Oh dear. I donot know that at all. May I know what would be the best time in the night to check it out? Do you put a plastic bag to cover the leaves? Do you use the copper stikers all over your edges, what is most effective way to get rid of slugs or snails. I saw there are some powder sell in one pound shop. I grow them in 40 L growing bags at moment.
I think everyone on here will tell you, copper, shingle, egg shells, nothing works you have to remove slugs and snails nightly, they come out after rain.we have a bucket of salty water, drop them in it. No,don't put a plastic bag over,if you see pigeons eating the peas,a bit of net held up with sticks.unless we have really heavy rain, daily water. Font feed till you get pods, then follow instructions on tomato feed, yes usually red bottle.we feed weekly
