Tangerine tree from seed

Hello gardeners,
exactly a year ago I planted a tangerine tree from a seed and it’s growing nice and strong, but i noticed it only grows one stalk with new leaves and doesn’t seem to want to grow any branches or expand sideways. I was wondering if this would change on its own and if it would start growing branches when it’s ready for it, or if I have to trim the top to give it a bit of motivation for it? If so, what is the right time for it and how much should I take off?
