Tree identification

Anyone know what this tree is called? Is it maple? Or a type of sycamore. It’s a big one

    No way! Acers are usually small trees I thought. This is a monster that has already been pruned drastically.

    Acers are a huge and varied group of trees - some tiny, some enormous.

    Not a favourite but good to give it a name. People seem to like it but it’s too big for most gardens in my view.

    Sycamore is an acer... Acer pseudoplatanus.

    Learn something new every day. This one doesn’t seed like the awful sycamore in the bordering property

    Acer platanoides ......commonly known as the Norway maple.
    Acer platanoides Crimson King is a form of that one with red leaves.
    A far better behaved tree than Acer pseudoplatanus...common name sycamore.
    And yes it can grow quite large.

    I had an acer that wasn't doing well in a container so I bunged it in the soil at the edge of the patio. After a few years growth, I became suspicious. I looked it up. They can eventually grow to about 30ft! I'm keeping it pruned for obvious reasons.
    Many container grown acers have the potential to be huge if planted out. But ,fortunately, it doesn't happen overnight.

    Thanks all, my brother has a little  acer in a pot, I’ll let him know what his could be like given time if planted in the ground 😆

    As has been said  Acers can be anything from 2 feet tall to about 20 metres high. 
    If you can get a photo of your brothers Acer, we might be able to identify it.
