You could cut it back by around a third. This is the time of year for doing that anyway (known as the "Chelsea chop" ). This will take some of the strain off it. If you got a good chunk of rootball it should be fine, just keep an eye on the watering. I would expect it to pick up in a day or two unless the weather turns really warm (unlikely ! ).
Yeah, I got all of the roots, just had to cut a small section (on one side of the clump) so hopefully it'll perk up. I'll give it a few days and see how it goes. When you say about the watering, does it need more than usual?
Depending on where you are, l should imagine the soil was pretty damp and easy to dig. We have had so much rain. Personally I would start by giving it around half to three quarters of a watering can, then watch and see how the soil drains. If it drains quickly, then give a bit more. If it starts to puddle, leave it. Leave it for 2 days, so say you do it tomorrow (Thursday), look at it again on Saturday, and do the same with half a can. Phlox are pretty tough, you may find that in the morning it's perked up overnight. That's what l would do .
