Sunken lawn that floods

Hi,

Looking for some advice on how best to remedy a persistent problem we have with our back garden. The family we bought the house off have dug down into clay and have attempted a sunken lawn but sadly the whole area floods at the slightest shower.

The area is about three meters wide by six meters in length with a depth of about six inches from the lawn surface to the surrounding gravel.

Sadly when I try to add a photo it says the size is too big. But happy to give more information.

I'm wondering how best to fix this issue as cost effectively as possible but any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Craig

Could it be that the water table is above the level of the sunken lawn? Or maybe the rainfall is draining partly in to the lawn? Difficult without seeing pictures.
If that is the case, then one option would be to fill in the area to bring the lawn up to the same height as the surrounding area (probably a LOT of soil involved).

I suppose it depends on how you want to use your garden and how much space you have available.  As previously mentioned, you either fill in, or you work with what you have and create a bog garden and fill with plants that don't mind getting a good soaking.  Or go the whole hog, hire a digger for the weekend and put in a pond!
