Acer Leaves

Hi I’m new to this forum.  I have an Acer I don’t know what species but has purple leaves. New leaves were coming through this year and have now wilted and dropped off, I’m not sure if the branches are dying but have turned a white colour, they feel strong too. It’s in full shade and I am wondering if I moved it into full sun/partial shade it may help the plant better if it still has any life in it. A response ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

    We'd need a photo.
This has been a difficult spring for Acers as the dry frosty April has affected many. Wind dries out foliage very quickly too.
Don't move it anyway. Although the purple varieties can stand a fair bit of sun, they have to be healthy and happy first. Full sun doesn't suit any of them if they're stressed. If it's in a pot, it's probably become bone dry.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Ok thank you. I will get a photo as soon as I can. It’s in the ground not in a pot if this makes any difference. Last year it’s leaves were great and didn’t have any issues whatsoever.

It will depend largely on location, and soil and climate too. It's easy for them to struggle if you don't have the conditions they like. We have perfect conditions for them in the west of Scotland - cool and damp.
Competition from other planting, size, and how long it's been established are all factors.
Some dieback of branches can happen after winter and isn't necessarily a problem. Those can be trimmed off as long as you don't cut back into healthy growth. Pruning is best done during dormancy though.  :)

  • Ok. I will take a picture and see what you think, it’s in a cool area of the garden and the soil is a mixture of clay, top soil and John innes number 2 compost
  • Sorry for the late post Fairygirl
  • If you zoom in on the stems they are white. The plant itself is still string and branches are strong too

Looks like a bad case of Verticillium wilt and I am afraid it looks dead.
How can you lie there and think of England
