Feeding squirrels to keep them away...

Hello,

My neighbour has a 30ft connifer on our boundary fence which is home to 2/3 squirrels. There are also numerous others in the area. So every day we have squirrels in the garden, digging small holes in the lawn, digging up the raised vegetable bed, and this year as it's been so cold and dry and food is in short supply they have eaten the flowers off the camelia and rhododendrons.

Detering them is impossible. There are about 5 that we see everyday. So, if I were to put a feeder at the back of the garden do you think they would take the food and leave my flowers/veg alone? Or would I just be making matters worse and attracting even more!

Thanks for the advice.

D

No, they just take the peanuts or whatever, and when they are full will bury the rest in your garden.

I rent our home and unfortunately at the bottom of the garden is an enormous (and I mean absolutely vast) conifer.  It is not only home to nuisance squirrels, it's sucking the life out of the garden slowly.  The squirrels are super destructive to the point I've had to put chicken wire over tubs and over the opening in my cold frame otherwise the buggers get in and ruin everything (I learnt the hard way).  If I had the money I'd get it removed but I pay enough in rent as it is!
