Identification required

Can anyone identify this please. It grows in shade behind a brick wall and comes up every year. I didn't plant it and have always assumed it to be a weed and dug it up but given the fact that it reappears in exactly the same place every spring I think I may be mistaken.
There are no signs of buds and it is about 30cm tall at the moment.. It is a darker green than the picture. Any ideas as what it could be?

  • Does it smell peppery when you crush the leaves?

This is what the leaves look like, they are growing alternately on the stems and have no discernable scent. (I don't have any sense of smell but my OH says it smells planty! )

The leaves look quite attractive, but many plants have similar ones. Leave it to flower this year and them it should be easier to ID and you will know whether to let it be or make a more determined elimination attempt!

I thought it might be a "wait and see" plant so if it flowers I'll let you know.( @Hostafan1 as my OH can't tell the difference between between a plant in the wrong place and a weed that was as much as I expected)

Just an update on my mystery plant, its ragwort! Don't think I've ever seen it close up before but when it developed clusters of yellow buds the penny dropped. It's now in a weed container and going to the tip tomorrow.
