Petunias turning purple

I bought some Petunia plugs and planted them up. A week or two later I noticed them turning
purple. It starts in the stem, then moves to the leaves and eventually the entire plant turns purple.
I thought it might be root rot but when I looked at the roots they were white and seemed really healthy.
I’ve isolated the affects plants out of fear it spreads but I can’t find out what it is?

Are they outside? If so they probably got too cold.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • They were in a greenhouse. The ones in the picture are outside as I took them out for fear they infect the others.

Fluctuating temperatures usually cause this, but on another note what compost are you growing them in ?
