Magnolia grandiflora Gallissoniensis leaves yellowing & falling off

We planted a relatively mature magnolia last autumn and while it looked fine all winter now looks pretty sorry for itself. It’s leaves are yellowing with a number of them falling off. I don’t know whether it’s normal at this time of year or whether we have a problem with it. Can anyone advise?

I suspect it is fine and you are just seeing the older leaves being replaced, as all evergreens do, particularly at this time of year.  The new leaves look healthy, so I suspect it will look fine in a month.  Mature trees like that are always difficult subjects to plant and maintain so you won't really know if it has established well until it has been in more than a year.  All you can do is water it during dry periods (a couple of bucketfuls, slowly poured over the roots so that it doesn't run off, once a week) and keep your fingers crossed.  Don't be tempted to feed it with anything.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Great - thanks @BobTheGardener! Will stop worrying and water as and when required (not for a while given the rain the last few weeks!) and hopefully watch it grow 😁

The root ball is probably small so make sure the water is directed near the trunk. Even with the wet weather it will need watering regularly for the first year until the roots spread out.

The foliage acts like an Umbrella so it’ll need watering even when it rains.
