I feel like I know what the answer to this might be, but...

I planted some Gladioli bulbs at the end of April/ early May. Seeing no movement at all yet I had a poke down at some and can see no signs of any shoots yet.

Another victim of the cold spring?

  • I potted up 4 lots of gladioli, starting end of February, each 2 weeks apart. The pots have been outdoors.

The first two have shoots, but not much from the two planted in April - so there is still hope!

The cold spring has retarded most things. Don't worry, if they were good firm corms, they will come up.

Gladioli are from Tropical America. They go into dormancy because of drought not cold. Cover them and DO NOT WATER. If they haven't already rotted. :( When it warms up ( S America remember) they will come through. Good luck!

I bought some in April when it was cold and bone dry in the garden so I planted them in a spare window box against a warm, south facing wall and gave them a good drink to get them going.   They are all now shooting and will be planted out as soon as I have decided where they will go as I've changed my mind about plan A.

The big blousy gladioli are native to South Africa but can now be found growing all over the world in Asia, Australasia, Europe and the Americas.  There are subtler forms such as byzantinium which come, as the name suggests, from Turkey and environs.
