Climbing rose - buds colour change

Hi all, attached is pic of one of my climbing roses. It was taking from a cutting and is about 3 years old now and pretty healthy in general terms. It is in a bed of its own (1mx1m) in compost mixed with manure and has been fed with top rose once this spring. It is south facing against the wall of our house. Not sure why, but the buds and leaves near the buds are changing colour to a white/silver and yet the foliage is pretty green and looks health? It doesn't seems to be affecting the plant but looks odd. As you can see on the right a bud has flowered and seems ok.
Anyone know what's going on here?
Cheers,

Paul

Hi - I suspect powdery mildew?
I think you're right .... that's what it looks like to me .... climbers planted against walls often succumb to powdery mildew when they're stressed by dry roots  which can happen because of the 'rain shadow' effect of the wall, plus the foundations acting like a sponge.  This spring was unusually dry .... even now that we've had plenty of rain the root area down below the surface may still be dry.

I would give that rose a couple of buckets of water today, poured slowly and gently on the root area so that it soaks in and doesn't run off the surface.  I would then give it a couple of buckets two or three times a week throughout the spring and summer ... whether it rains or not.   :)

Looks like PM to me too.
  • Cheers all. That makes sense as I haven't watered it at all lately assuming the British weather had got it covered for me! Will get on it now. Thanks for the help
