Cutting a foot or two off the top will just give you ugly ‘sticks’ ... it won’t produce shoots lower down ... it’s a grass and behaved like a lawn does when it’s cut ... it just grows taller again ... how tall depends on the variety.

What can be done is to strip the lower leaves from each cane, leaving a bare stem with the leaves just at the top couple of feet. You can make quite a feature of it ... https://blog.lisacoxdesigns.co.uk/design-tips/let-your-bamboo-stems-shine/

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Hire a digger it's the only way unfortunately. No matter how far down you dig by hand it's never enough.had the same problem.next door complained as it popped up on their patio slabs..or rather moved them..

After eight years my bamboo has started invading next door. I get anxiety every time I see it as I know it is going to run rampant if nothing is done. Problem is I have planted it right next to my pond. :(

My neighbours have no idea what a problem we potentially have.
