NewBoy2NewBoy2 Posts: 1,813
I hgave some of the above and they are 2 foot tall and skinny and will be affected by the strong winds on my plot.

I have heard that you can plant with some of the stem under the earth.

? Is this true

    Yes
The plants will then grow feeding roots from the buried stem, just don't overdo it :)
Up to the 1st set of true leaves is what I do

Yes, I also bury part of the stem when I plant tomatoes, they will grow new roots on that part of the stem.

Looking at them now there are a set of leaves that have turned white with tiny new shoots coming out of the gap and then the next set of true leaves are 6 inches above the pots soil level.

Pick off the white ones and plant them about 3 - 4" deep up the stems.

    I agree
If there are any side-shoots low down remove them before plunging them into the ground

It's a bit chilly for planting toms outside atm
Can you wait a week or  ....... until it warms up a tad.
If the night temps are below about 12C then they won't grow and may just keel over

I plant mine about 4inches deep, but inside a bottomless 7.5L pot sunk an inch into the soil . This makes waterin easier as it all does down rather than across the bed. As the plants get bigger , I add more compost into the pot an inch of two at a time .
