Seed/weed dilemma

Hi all,

Was planning to re seed the front lawn. Moss has all been killed off but I didn't realise the amount of weeds in the lawn. Huge patches everywhere with trailing roots etc. See pic. I've dug out loads but loads still remain. I guess I should use a weedkiller but then will I miss my window for seeding? I assume you have to wait a while after to lay seed. Also tempted to just sow a load of seed and hope it works...any suggestions??

Many thanks!

  • Why is your window for seeding so restricted. The very hard frosts that might kill grass seedlings should be gone and the effects of drought if that was to hit your lawn area could be overcome by just giving it some water while the new lawn seeds are getting established. I don't like toxic chemicals in my garden so I'd be more inclined to take off the sods of weeds and stack them up somewhere and cover them so they die off and turn to compost. Not sure about the levels in your garden allowing for this but when I did this job for someone before I added compost to top up the level again with the fresh grass seed. I like a lawn area to have some wildflowers like daisy and clover and think a pure grass lawn looks a bit boring but what type of lawn you want to keep is up to yourself.
    Happy gardening!
