Is my wisteria going to die?

Hi. I have a ten year old wisteria that has blossomed beautifully every year. This year it looks almost dead. a few spindly flowers, no leaves and branches look like this won't improve. Two things have changed. One the ongoing frost here in the Midlands followed by ongoing atrocious wet weather and still quite cold even though late May. The second thing is I planted at the base of the trunk three heucheras for added interest. Sine the wisteria is well established I thought this would be ok. Do. you think either of these things have contributed towards my poorly looking wilting wisteria? Hope you can help. Helen

My 2 large wisterias are inherited and grown right up against walls and they are very deep rooted so I don't think a few shallow rooted heucheras will affect it.

I think your problem is more likely the long, cold, dry April with strong winds, late frosts and almost no rain.   Try giving it 15 to 20 L of water, poured slowly round the roots so it sinks in and doesn't just run off.  Do this every 2 or 3 days for a couple of weeks and then at least once a week.   It should recover.

If it does, give it a liquid feed of tomato feed to encourage healthy flowers and foliage but don't feed it yet while it's stressed. Don't let it go thirsty during any hot or dry spells this summer.

thank. you so much for your advice. I was quite surprised about the water pouring as it hasn't stopped raining here ha! Having said that It's against an old wall so maybe it hasn't had as much water as I thought. I'll give your advice a go. Many thanks. Helen

I thought I lost my wisteria after the bitter winter a few years ago. It basically died right back to the trunk and all the branches fell off. I was gutted. But... it sprouted again from the stump and now about 3 years later I have had the first flowers from it. Still a long way to go with it, but it didn’t die.

Thank you. That’s hopeful. Did you feed it to help it grow again? Like Obelixx suggests?

No i never fed it as i thought it had died. May do now though as it is coming back.

Don't feed while it is stressed.  Wait for it to show signs of recovery after being thoroughly watered.
