Lettuces being bitten off whole from the stem?

Each morning while checking my young lettuces, I notice a couple more plants have been severed from the roots whole. For the best part the leaves have been left alone. I have a net over them to keep any birds away. Any ideas?

    Slugs can do that.

    Not just can, they will ... and they do!!! 😡

    wireworm can as well, next time you find one that has just wilted pull it up with it's roots and have a look.
