Is it over for my Norway maple?

Last year I posted pictures of the leaves on my Norway maple, it was identified as having tar spot. It had never had this before.

So when the leaves dropped I was very careful in making sure I got rid of all them from the ground.

This year, it hasn't leafed out. There is a tiny bit of green going on at the top, but it looks dead. This has never happened before either.

I thought tar spot was essentially harmless. I'm worried now that it was actually verticillium wilt, or maybe something else like a root issue.

There is a baby tree that has grown from the seed of this one, and it's absolutely fine. Full of healthy looking leaves.

Can anything be done or is it a lost cause?

Picture from last year, and now.

That looks a goner to me I'm afraid and I think you should get it felled asap. I believe they have a reputation for dropping dead branches without warning. We have two 50ft very old ones overhanging our garden which makes me very nervous during gales.

Thank you Lizzie. Such a shame, it's been a lovely tree (and the birds are a fan too).

Despite living here a decade I'm only renting. So I think I'm off to search for a nice tree I can keep in a pot.

After ringing the tree man of course!

They are lovely trees, especially in the autumn when they change colour so spectacularly but not so much when planted close to a house.
    Hope your landlord/landlady contributes.

Thank you! Hopefully they might, usually anything garden related is on us.

It is in the autumn when I will miss it the most. My favourite time of year because of the trees!
