Silver Birch Sapling

My little silver birch sapling was growing quite happily in a pot.  Today it was totally destroyed.  Inside the pot was an ants nest but not black ants they were a golden colour.  Has anyone else had a problem like this?  Unfortunately it is not salvageable.

If there are ants in the pot it means they've been nesting and they only do that in dry places so you've not been watering it enough.

With small pots the best way to water is to dunk the entire pot in a bigger bucket of water until no further air bubbles appear and then let it drain.   That way you know the entire pot is moist.  Just watering from above means the water doesn't hit every spot and that allows ants in to tunnel and nest and make it worse.

Once a pot is too big to dunk, the best protection is a saucer so water that runs thru the compost can be soaked up slowly afterwards from the base.
