Kniphofia uvaria

Hi everybody.

Looking for some thoughts on K. uvaria.

How thuggish a plant is it? And can I (I know I don't need to; but can I) cut the old foliage back either at the end of the flowering season, so that it doesn't look raggedy through the winter, or is that a big "no no"?

Any thoughts appreciated.

    I looked it up to see what Kniphofia uvaria looks like (too garish for my taste I'm afraid), but found this on the RHS site: 
    • Garden care: In autumn remove and compost the faded flower spikes and apply a deep dry mulch such as pine needles around the crown of the plant. Cut back to the ground in spring to keep the foliage fresh-looking. Divide and replant overcrowded colonies in spring.

    Thanks. I saw that too but was wondering if anybody had any actual experience of cutting it back in the Autumn to make it tidy for the winter.
