  • yeah, I don't think it was sick - I forget how it was removed - cutting very close to the ground.
I did try to give it a preservation order, but no-one was interested in my wishes sadly (from my point of view).

It is a bit invasive here but you can put a metal blocker around it. It propagates via underground and surface roots so if you want to remove it, dig it out, scan for any roots left behind and be ready to kill any roots that you missed.
  • this is a pic of the field maple.
    The kerria is long gone.
It was the field maple I was wondering about how to remove.
I garden organically, so avoid -cides.

I'd probably move it during autumn or when its dormant. Maybe 4 or 5 metres away from the wall. It probably wouldn't do any foundation damage in the short term but I think the tree would be healthier sited elsewhere. Just be prepared for a lot of spade work!  :|
  • thanks, it hadn't occurred to me to move it - sadly, I have nowhere to put it!

Advertise it on the 'net for free (they have to dig it up of course...just be sure it isn't near any services!). To buy trees of that size is an expense.
  • interesting idea - thanks!
  • maybe Freecycle???
