Japanese maple issue

I am posting this on behalf of a friend, she has one very unhappy looking acer. Would anyone know what the cause is and what could she do to remedy this?
Lots of die back on branches, leaves curled etc. It has been watered well during the recent dry spell, it has been fed with acer appropriate feed.

It looks dry to me and it would be better in a compost with more loamy matter than MPC.   It's been really cold and dry and windy and that will add to problems of lack of moisture at the roots because the young buds and foliage are so very tender and easily burned.

I would advise it be moved to a sheltered corner, out of any wind and midday sun and kept moist but not drowning to see if it recovers.   If it does, re-pot with a mix of John Innes no 3 and about 25% MPC.

    Frost damage?
Ours looked the same for some weeks but thankfully it has survived and looks great.

I have an acer that looked very similar to that last year. Moved it, and it has recovered extremely well. The spot it was in seems to have had too much of a drying wind for it, so I moved its pot to near my older (thriving) acer, and has worked wonders. I would move it to a sheltered corner, and prune off any dead bits once growing season is over. You might not see the improvement until next spring, so be prepared to be patient.
