The only grass clippings that you should perhaps not compost are from grass that's been treated with weedkiller (some sources say that they're OK if left to compost down for long enough but I don't think I'd chance it if I used lawn weedkiller). You might prefer to avoid composting long grass that's got seed heads because domestic compost (except maybe @Wilderbeast 's :D ) generally doesn't get hot enough to kill the seeds.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Never seen one of those before Papi Jo. What's it called?

This particular model is a French "invention", I think. It's called "brass'compost'. More about it here: http://www.brasscompost.fr/
I'm sure there are similar tools available in the UK.

@Fire you are right, am currently driven by a little neighbourly rivalry as they try to fulfill their own composting nirvana (they can't get the heat and don't quite believe that they can use all there grass clippings). @JennyJ so far I've been really pleased with how few weeds have grown out of my compost

@Wilderbeast I hope you can help them out.

@Fire I am keen to help and have tried to impart my knowledge (I say this in a comedy sense not as a know all🙂). Thing is they have read everything going about making compost nearly all which say don't add this, don't add, do make perfect little layers of greens and browns, keep it just damp but not wet. All I can say to that is 🤯🤯.  They are wanting to make compost in 3 months, even I can't make proper compost that quick despite all my efforts. I do though add absolutely everything to my heap, turn it lots, talk to it very nicely and end up making loads of beautiful compost in the autumn.

@Wilderbeast There are many ways to skin a cat.  The processes sound like they work for the neighbours. You are a radical!  :D I think it's great that you have neighbours who are interested. I don't know anyone else on my street who would touch composting with a barge pole. When I moved in with my compost bins, I was regarded as if I were starting a brown rat farm/leper colony.

I am quite careful about what I put in my compost. I would love to try layering, if I had space to store the elements. I do make three month compost in black dustbins, over a summer season, with cold systems. I think a food waste / paper mix is probably the easiest way to do this. My garden waste is chunkier and takes longer and I don't have any grass.
