What is this on my Fatsia Japonica?

I planted my new Fatsia Japonica about two weeks ago and have noticed the leaves have started to deteriorate. On closer inspection I can see the stems and especially the new growth is covered in reddish brown spots (fungus? eggs??). What is this?  Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

I also spotted these two on the leaf yesterday, are these thrips?

I think this is a query for @Fairygirl re the Fatsia and @wild edges re the flies.

Not thrips. Maybe a picture-wing fly or similar group. Nothing harmful.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

My fatsia looks like yours every year but I think that's the way it grows, nothing to worry about.

The reddish fuzz is called indumentum. It's meant to be there on the new leaves/stems and disappears as they mature. Not sure about the insects though.

    Perfectly normal  :)
The flies won't be a problem for it either. They aren't prone to much in the way of insect problems.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
