Sarcoccus hookeriana var. dignya..... Basically a lot of googling. Try the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society. "Find that plant". You don't have to be a member. Good luck!

  • Thank you - yes I'm a beginner doing a lot of googling!

I checked RHS out for you. Nothing. It is also known as "Sweet Box". Do you plan to use if for mini-hedging? There have been a lot of problems with box blight disease in UK. Have you considered yew?

  • Im not planning to use it for hedging. Just need an elegant evergreen shrub, approx 2m round,  dense shady spot, east facing, acid soil.
Hmmm dont think I want the weed look or box blight as had that already! Any other suggestions gratefully received.
  • They don't suffer from box blight that's why they are sometimes used as a alternative.
  • Ah right! Thank you!

Box blight affects Buxus, not Sarcococca. Common names can be misleading (admittedly it's the same family, but not genus). If it affected everything where the word 'box' was mentioned, removal firms would be in trouble!
In my experience it's pretty slow growing, so you'll need a sizeable one or quite a lot of patience if the size is important to you. It's a lovely shrub though.

I've also been seeking out a sarcococca ghorepani.
About two years ago it was marked as being available (from Crocus) from late spring.
In late spring availability changed to early autumn, then early early autumn it changed to early spring etc
So I've been waiting for 2 years now.
It only seems to be sold by Crocus and Coolings (out of stock)
Now doubt they'll be available soon as I decide to get something else instead.

  • LG thank you. Im willing to watch it grow patiently so I'll see if I can get hold of it.

Pete.8 that is useful to know thanks.  Im such a beginner Ive never bought a plant online before! I will wait til early next year otherwise will choose something else. Good luck with the ghorepani.

Have a look at sarcococca confusa - evergreen, scented flowers in winter/spring and listed as being sold by 94 nurseries on the RHS plant finder site.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
