Tom plants on window sill-what size pot is YOUR limit?

    Mine are in 6/7 inch pots on the windowsill - just potted on about a week ago or so. I wouldn't be potting them into anything bigger unless they were staying in pots. The next move would be their final if that was the case.  :)
    Mine will be planted into the ground in the greenhouse this year, as I've moved it into a border. Our climate here doesn't suit outdoor growing.
    I think if yours are going outside in the ground, you could do the same. They should be fine without another move into a bigger pot by the time you can safely put them outdoors.  :)
    I've never taken much notice of the round/square debate either. I use whatever suits the plants I have, especially when moving them into a bigger size.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    @Nanny Beach
    All the 4 sides are the same  nanny, but we have to consider the taper.

    It's a question of light for me! (And space, as I have lots of other things on the one window sill I can use, too.) So once they go into their intermediate pots - probably about the size of your pink one -  they go on the floor in the sitting room (we have French windows.)
    I won't pot them into their final pots until they go outside in a few weeks.
    And yes, I feel overwhelmed... the tomatillos are now nearly five feet tall and the tomatoes 4ft, and seriously need potting on. I can't see outside properly from my where I sit anymore.

    You have done well to get your Toms to 4ft by now. When did you sow them, and under what conditions.

    I only decided to sow these Black Crims when I saw Monty sowing some. This was early March, but I don't know when the episode was filmed?

    This was 3 weeks ago above, last week below. All toms are now in the same size pot as the one on the left this week.  Good thing I have wide windowsills!

    I do have a wide window sill in my lounge,it's also very low,about 2,feet off the floor and a nosy curtain twitching border collie,so I can't put anything on there. I used to have seeds in the bedroom window, it's a bungalow,(they have been in the spare room, kitchen, conservatory,etc,),but she knocked them off one day and wet compost pale grey carpet,nah.

    Mine are in 9cm pots, has been for some time, they are probably filling the pots but not yet too rootbound. I don't have space for bigger pots. Also, they are getting leggy. They need to go to the greenhouse asap but I would like to see at least 8C consistently at night. It's always about the temperature vs light compromise.

    @young codger I sowed at the beginning of March and they have been in the house all along. A bit early, I think really. Next year I will sow later, possibly... :) In the past I have mainly bought tomato plants, so little experience of when a good time to sow is. Next year a greenhouse (unheated) will be added to the mix, though so that will be another learning experience. (What the temperature differential is etc.)

    Most of mine are now too big for the widow ledge. I have been hardening them off for a week now as I had hoped to maybe get them out soon. Looking at the weather forecast for the next week I don’t see it happening so may need to pot them on for a fourth time!
