I never put small plugs in the ground in their first year, pot on until you have a big plant, they survive slugs and weather better. Plugs this year, plant out next year.

I ordered begonias but can't see them being big enough to plant out before July
Just think that you will still have plants in your garden when other peoples are finished. they have such a long blooming time, especially if you pick the females off before they go to seed.

Slightly off topic.. but I just received my plug plants (trailing surfinia) from J Parker’s and this is the condition they arrived in..
I think they’re noticeably better than the OP’s but the second one from the right was really damaged abs stunted compared to the rest.. I’ve potted it up anyway but should I contact j Parker’s before it’s too late?
I’ve just received an email from them apologising profusely and have advised they are sending me a “summer saver collection” which should arrive by the end of May. I’ll see what these are like and if they are similar quality I’ll ask for a refund
