Cardoon stem rot

Hi all,
Has anyone seen a cardoon stem rot and collapse before? I hadn't noticed anything wrong with the plant until yesterday when I saw it had fallen over. On inspection the very bottom of the stem is squidgy and black, like it has rotted away. I have propped it up with a bamboo cane as I was hoping its four heads will still open but is this wishful thinking? Should I destroy it?
