I have used mycorrhizal fungi powder when planting shrubs and trees and I can fully understand the logic of symbiosis between the fungi and the roots seeking out water.
However, it may have been on GQT or something else in the last few weeks where they categorically rubbished it, suggesting that the only thing proven to make any difference was biochar! They said that mycorrhizal fungi is present in all soil anyway so adding it brings no benefit.
Totally agree, there is no evidence. Fungal networks are undoubtedly important for woody plants and trees, but we have no idea as to what type of fungi, or even whether the stuff we buy in packets is viable.
