I'm also single and I find 5 - 6 plants is enough, planted in a big 18' x 18" pot but I put my canes in upright, wired together in the round as that way they don't get tangled at the top as a wigwam does. Oh, and pinch out the tops about 6" from the top so they don't keep going skyward.
East Dorset, new (to me) rather neglected garden.

SueAtoo  Just a tip.  If you don't want the faff or expense of buying new canes every other year, two chimney sweeping/drainage rods joined together as one stick will last for years and each pair will easily support two plants.  So, your 6 plants will need 3 double 'sticks', ideally wired in the way you're doing at present, and mine are already in their ninth year (and counting).

Thanks everyone for replies. @Nanny Beach I bought one pot but it has about five 'stalks' in it, does that constitute one plant or five? Do I put in 18" pot with canes now or in June when it goes out? t i a

Can we have a picture, perhaps it's ,5, plants in one pot.you need it harden off,out daily for a week, back in at night, then leave them out at night as well for a week, then into the final pot with the sticks. A pot that size a wigwam structure would be more stable.we had years of canes, now the old man has made me black obelisks, but this year they are already planted up with peas and sweet peas, mixed.
