Acid or alkaline?

Is there any simple way of testing whether your soil is acid, alkaline or neutral. This question is not for me. I know my soil is alkaline as it has big lumps of limestone in it.... In many cases it's not so easy, however, and a lot of people seem to be very unclear about it.

Go to a fish shop and buy some litmus paper it's sold for measuring pH in the tanks. mix some of your soil with distilled water and match the paper to the scale provided. Just remember that pH can change very fast, for example I have chalk chunks in my soil and a pH of 8.5 but in my front garden I have rhododendrons. someone has done a lot of work to make it work for them and a test under them shows a much lower pH.
