Rhodochiton Atrosanguineus

I have just bought 5 x Rhodochiton atrosanguineus jumbo seedlings. How many would I plant in a pot about 30cm radius. No guide anywhere online for spacing these.

You will need a bigger pot than 30cm  for just one plant.
They grow big, up an arch or similar,  probably won’t over winter in the U.K., they’re tender plants.

  • Wow. Really? I was going to grow them as annuals but was going to put 2 in that pot so it has lots of flowers. It's also infront of a trellis . Will 2 be too many then?
  • Lyn. What if I planted directly into the ground? What spacing would you recommend then please?

RHS gives a spread of 0,1 to 0.5m so about 2 to 3ft apart.
  • Thanks K67.

Good luck with them! Mine never really got going last year. If you are going to plant them into the ground wait until they are sizeable plants or at least make sure they are planted with plenty of space around them. (The ones I planted into my bed couldn't compete with the geraniums etc surrounding them).

I'm in the east of Scotland and mine is still in the ground after three years (snow, frost, wind blah blah blah) and seems to have survived with minimal mulch.  I put one in a 40cm wide pot (at the top) and it looked a bit sparse though maybe there wouldn't have been enough nutrients and space for a second one.  Also, I bought mine two ways over two years - first year I bought plants in June from a great local garden centre which already had decent growth on them and they romped away (in the ground and in pots) and the next year I bought jumbo plugs (from a respected online supplier) and they were PATHETIC in pots, just a total waste of time.
  • Thanks Tanty2. I've planted 1 in the 30cm pot so far and plan to try the rest in the ground. If they grow so big I find it odd that I had to buy 5 plugs and didn't get the option of fewer. Well, I shall see.....you certainly get harsher conditions than we do in Somerset but we do get one hell of a lot of rain .
