Clematis

Hi all.
Any advice welcome on how to kill off some very large rooted clematis.

    If you really want rid of it, cut it right back to a few feet from the base and dig it out, using the stumps as a lever. 
    Or, cut it back to the base and use  brushwood stump killer, although this isn't the time of year to do it - best done in winter. You could cut it back just now and then wait to do that. 
    Montanas will actually respond well to being cut back hard, so it will grow back through the summer.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
