Big yellow scale insect on rose stems

Hi I have a small number (<10) of quite big yellow scale insects on a rose plant in North London, surrounded by ants. Can anyone help identify these?

There are a number of large scale insects which will affect several types of woody plant, Brown scale being the most likely.  Rub them off (wear gloves if you're squeamish) before they release hundreds of young (known as crawlers) which are mobile and will move to other stems before settling down to their new permanent homes on the bush (or nearby ones.)  The nymphs are usually released this or next month and one end of each adult will swell-up with a white waxy substance which protects the newly hatched young.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
