Dahlias and Salvia amistad

punkdocpunkdoc Posts: 15,039
There has been a lot of discussion recently about people experiencing lack of growth in their Dahlia tubers and their S. amistad, so I wondered whether my experiences this year might be a help. I have grown both for many years.

S. amistad, dug up as usual in Autumn, put in cold g/h, first sign of growth seen today, 12/5/21. During the last few years, have always seen growth by mid April.

Dahlia tubers, planted in barely damp compost, cold g/h, during first week of April. First signs of growth seen today, again normally by end April.

We are 500 feet up and it can be very cold, but this year is late.

Very cold spell here 960’ up,  frosts -c temps and snow.
i don’t actually have the Amistad but I have Back n Blue, similar,   They are all up in the garden.
Dalhias, I don’t start them until they start to shoot,  then set in compost,  same as usual, shooting in March, potted up, they are now about 2 ft’ planted some out, the growing times seem the same as any year.  So despite all the frosts and ice, no difference.
I wouldn’t put them out in a cold GH to start off with though.

I do think I've lost the ones I left out in the garden though and that is a first.

Thanks, that's useful. I've been telling my Dad who is not a million miles from you and about the same altitude to give his salvias (all grown as cuttings from mine) a while longer before writing them off as dead. I think more cuttings are in order this year anyway.

My last Amistad has finally decided that the weather is warm enough for it to start growing.

  • The six I have in my border are waking up, only two have some decent growth...fingers crossed they do grow rapidly once they put their mind to it.

I thought I’d lost my big clump of Honka, but he’s up just about.

Yes, my Amistads (all pretty chunky, all been in the border for 4-5 years) are all starting to put on new growth, but very slowly. I just hope they speed up so that they have enough time to flower! Dahlias not too different from usual (I overwintered them in shed, and potted them up as usual in March - April, now in beds doing well).
