Does anyone know what this is?!

Hello! I’m hoping someone can solve this for me! Does anyone know what this pile of wooden looking pellets under my lilac tree is? It keeps appearing? Is it a pest or animal dropping? It’s always in the exact same spot but I can’t identify anywhere in the lilac it could be coming from...any insight appreciated!

It’s possible they are the leftovers of a spider’s meals...

Is something boring into the lilac? Any holes there?

Looks like a lilac borer.  A moth lays eggs and the pupa and larva live on/in the tree, I assume on the soft wood inside a branch.  They they hatch and clear off !

  • Thanks for responding! I will have a look - I couldn’t see any holes in the tree but it sounds like that might be right! I was worried it might affect the decking we’ve just put down around it but hopefully it’s a lilac-only thing!
