Soil

Hi,

We have just had new slabs laid. We have extended the lawn area slightly and so have filled with top soil. The soil has been down for 4 days and is incredibly stodgy to the extent that I can't level it to place lawn seed. What can I do to make the soil solid enough?

Thanks guys.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
    Patience is what's needed.

  • Thanks. I know the weather has been bad but the soil is just like sludge so I’m a bit worried about how it will ever be suitable to lay seed on.

What is the soil laid on top of? If there's a solid layer of clay under it, that can be difficult, and you'd need to break that up to make sure the drainage is decent enough.

Otherwise, if it's just wet [ as bare soil often becomes after rain ] you'll just need to wait until drier conditions, when the soil is more friable and suited to seeding. Once there's a layer of grass, the soil will become drier anyway as the grass takes up the moisture.  :)
