Help damaged tree roots!

Hi, hi there.
We’ve been having some landscaping done and retuned home today and found they’ve dug far to close to a beautiful big tree in our garden.  They’ve dug and cut right through some big woody roots and removed sound right up to it where a small stone wall was supporting.
It’s only on one side and maybe 30-40cm removed.
It’s a type of crabapple tree (Japanese) and must be very old as lived here 2 years and not grown much.  It’s about 6x6 height and spread.
Can anybody please help us save this gorgeous tree?

We had the same problem whilst having a garage built quite a few years ago. The digger chappie swung round and accidentally tore a large root off at the base of the tree, a young purple leaved cherry. I got the builders to insert a large stake, tied the tree to it and infilled around the base with good topsoil/manure. I didn't think it would survive but it has.
I wouldn't worry too much as your tree will have other roots around it. I would keep it well watered and replace the soil around it. It's got a 50/50 chance after all and crabapples are not that expensive to buy if it does not survive.
    Good luck.
