Acer problem

Something is attacking my acer. It's all over my plant. Is it likely to attack my other plants? Thanks.

Have you tried hosing them off? I thought they were aphids at first , but they don't spread about like that usually. Do you think they're ants?
    In London. Keen but lazy.

It's an aphid and I think it's one that only bothers certain maple species. If the tree doesn't show signs of problems then leave them to the birds.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I had the same on my acer in the front garden. Gave it some big spray twice over the course of 4 days and they're almost gone now

Do they look like these on closer inspection?

I think they are maple aphids, so specific to Acer trees.
We've got them on the Acer in the ground and the ones in containers.  They seems to disappear after a couple of light sprays with very low concentration washing up liquid, but now there are tonnes more than before on the container ones.

I used a hand sprayer, set it to jet and 'shot' a lot of them off.  The birds do seem to eat some too, so I am trying to avoid using anything that isn't good for birds.
  • These have wings. I'll try some bug spray as the whole plant which is quite large is infested and the leaves don't look very happy. Thanks.

They could be maple aphids after they've grown wings.  I saw a few winged critters on out Acers today.  Maybe I should grab a photo of those too.

    Best of luck :)

Bought a new acer the other week and when I got it home I discovered these 'critters' on the underside of leaves. Used a small paintbrush to remove most of them then lightly spayed the rest off. Fine now.
  • Bug spray worked but it didn't help that it kept raining at the time. Plant is happy and healthy again. Thanks.
