Is my apple tree non-recoverable?

Hi, we moved home this year and have inherited an apple tree which looks to be half alive, half dead. Easy as it might be to say I’ll just cut off the dead branches, I’m wondering whether this might be terminal given the damage to the main trunk.

It’s not as easy to see in the photo as I’d hoped, but you can see the dead branches towards the front, and living (green, sprouting) branches towards the back.

thanks in advance for any help!

I would guess it hasn't got much time left and will not be much to look at while it's dying. You have no emotional attachment to it, so I would say remove it and replace it with a tree of your choice to celebrate your new home :)
